School Milk List is a service of FAO’s Trade and Markets Division
Dear Michael
Yes, it is very good to get feedback! Forgive me for not responding. We are already sharing the report locally within the Tanzania dairy Development Platform, having been circulated by members such as The International Livestock Research Institute (copied). We shall give you feedback on how this is helping within our local context where we are facing milk quality issues in our market.
Regards
Maria

Dear Michael,
I am very new to this list, and therefore this is the first communication I received from you.
I haven’t had yet the time to read the report on Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition, but the table of contents is already very interesting to me.
My current job is about looking at my company’s dairy business from an operations point of view and to help shaping our strategies for the mid and long term. One of our fundamental purposes is to help the world “go well” by providing adequate food (“Nutrition, Health and Wellness”). For that, reports like this are very important, since they enable me (and everybody else) to see a world’s view of the issues, challenges, advances, etc., that determine our industry and its sustainability.
Therefore, thank you very much for having made this report and for doing the work you do. FAO, through people like you, are providing an invaluable service to the world’s community.
Best regards,

Thanks to all those who provided comments (listed below), including Bruce’s suggestion that I needed a cappuccino on FAO’s famous roof terrace.
Well, having just come back from having the same, I must admit I feel a bit more sanguine ….. however, being by nature the sort of person who doesn’t see why he should be pushing if no-one else is, I fear that my feeling of well-being will only be short lived – unless we have regular participation by members as an accompaniment to my coffees.
Other the life of the list – about 16 years – we have faced this problem a number of times in the past. When we started in 1997, e-mail was new and getting/sending one as a novel experience: not anymore. Still, this List is a system for exchanging information, not simply supplying information. Therefore, every member has something to add … and we want to hear from you. Gabriele and Miguel, it’s nice to know that members read the messages, but we also want to receive comments and information from members; only in this way will we continue to be a dynamic and varied discussion list.

Dear Michael,
I appreciate this report very much since I am often involved in discussions about the role of the dairy industry in feeding the world. This report offers a lot of information for improving discussions about this topic.
And it is important that it is made under responsibility of FAO. I am sure I will use it for on-going discussions. Very valuable overview of contemporary facts.
With kind regards,

Dear Michael,
Sounds like you need one of your famed cappuccinos, on the balcony of the FAO building with a biscotti or some sugary confection. Many thanks for the news that Chapter 8 (Dairy-industry development programmes: Their role in food and nutrition security and poverty reduction by Dugdill, Bennett, Phelan & Scholten) is published. Milk is again showing how important it is in nutrition and small-family-scale development.
By the way, where is Barbara, who's been running DOL for years? We love you both!
Ciao! Bruce

Dear All,
The FAO report on Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition is available at: http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/i3396e/i3396e.pdf
I know that perhaps members need cranking up after the break; however, I have to say that simply sending out messages and not receiving comments or contributions in reply is rather a thankless task … hardly makes me feel like opening the mailbox each morning, when all I see are bulk mailings and circulation reports. After all, this is not meant to be a one-man-show.
Therefore, I would like to ask everyone to take a few minutes out, stretch your fingers and let’s have some discussion … or a least some sign of life.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Michael
