Happy International Youth Day, everyone!

This year, IYD’s theme is Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward. So why is youth migration such an important issue?

Did you know that:

· … unemployment rates for youth are almost three times higher than adult ones in all regions of the world? (ILO, 2010) Migration is often seen by youth as a – or even the only – strategy to cope with limited employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.

· … nearly 60 percent of international migrants under the age of 20 live in developing countries? (UN-DESA, 2010)

· … 60 percent of total child labour is in agriculture, and 59 percent of total hazardous child labour is also found in agriculture? (ILO, 2010 & 2011)

For these reasons, FAO is working with partners such as the International Labour Organization and Youth Farmer’s Associations to provide rural youth in developing countries with inclusive, employment-oriented vocational training and education to help create opportunities in their local communities. At the same time, FAO supports initiatives which help maximize the benefits of migration, such as co-development (the improvement of social conditions both in source countries and residence countries) and remittance schemes (money migrant workers send back home).
