New FAO website for Armenia

FAO has launched at the beginning of September 2013 a new website for its country representation in Armenia.

This website has been launched within the framework of the organization’s new communication policy.

The new FAO corporate website together with the country websites are meant to provide cohesive information about the Organization and a clearer view of FAO to both its staff and the outside world.

Feedback from FAO Country Profile users

The FAO Country Profiles team received the feedback from the user survey conducted in July and August 2013. The responses received are taken into consideration by the FCP team in the ongoing designing the new website and modeling the services.

A total of 280 people responded to the survey and 55% of the participants came from Government, NGOs and Research Organizations. The survey also attracted 41% of the respondents from Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries.

As Madagascar food crisis looms, locust control campaign launched

A locust control campaign is starting in Madagascar against a plague of the Malagasy Migratory Locust, which threatens the food security and livelihoods of 13 million people or nearly 60 percent of the island's population. Spraying operations are expected to start by late October, after the onset of the rainy season.

FAO smartphone app shows potential for improving disease surveillance and reporting in Uganda

FAO launched last August 2013 a pilot project for a mobile application to report disease outbreaks in ten districts in Uganda. Funded by the Government of Ireland under the One Health initiative, this pilot project represents the first time the application is being introduced at national level for disease reporting.

Georgia joins the European Commission for the control of foot-and-mouth disease

Georgia became the 37th member of the the European Commission for the control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) in July 2013. This recent addition marks a new and proactive stage for Georgia in the country’s efforts to control transboundary animal diseases.

FAO project boosts capacity building in Southern African countries fighting small ruminant plague

A total population of 12 million sheep and goats in MalawiMozambique and Zambia and 50 million in Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries are at great risk of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a disease that attacks small ruminants.
