Healthy people depend on healthy food systems Contact: Events to be held all week on the importance of food systems for food security and nutrition, food waste, and the International Year of Quinoa; Romans to run against hunger
on 20 October Wednesday 16 October 2013 – FAO will commemorate World Food Day with events in Rome and around
the world. This year’s slogan is Healthy people depend on healthy food systems and the theme is Sustainable food systems for food security and nutrition. The day is also the anniversary of FAO’s founding in 1945. According to the latest figures, a total of 842 million people worldwide are chronically undernourished. Meanwhile, unsustainable models of development are degrading the natural
environment, threatening ecosystems and biodiversity that will be needed for our future food supply.
A food system is made up of the environment, people, institutions and processes by which agricultural products are produced, processed and brought to consumers.
Every aspect of the food system has an effect on the final availability and accessibility of diverse, nutritious foods – and therefore on consumers’ ability to choose healthy
diets. World Food Day 2013 is an opportunity to explore these and other issues, and help bring about the future we want. Week’s events Wednesday, 16 October: World Food Day ceremony,
