Dear Subscriber,

ˇ         Overall, international prices in November have not changed since the previous month, as the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 224 points, similar to October.  A revival of import demand in Asia lifted the quotations of the higher quality Indica rice. The fragrant rice market also showed strength, but both the lower quality Indica and the Japonica rice segments were under pressure.

ˇ         Prices in Thailand continued to slide, especially that of brokens, (Thai AI Super), which fell by 5 percent compared to October and now stood 30 percent below its level in November last year.  The benchmark Thai white rice 100%B was also down, weakening by 1.3 percent compared to October. Similarly, there was a general tendency for prices to soften in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and the United States. By contrast, prices in India and Viet Nam registered further gains. Export quotations were also up in Pakistan, on rising local transport costs.

ˇ         Based on the FAO Index, between January and November, rice export prices averaged 1 percent higher in 2013 than in 2012, sustained by a 22 percent gain for aromatic rice, while prices of the lower quality Indica  were down 2 percent, the higher quality Indica down 5 percent and Japonica down 2 percent.

For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database  http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards.  Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 83 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
