Dear Colleagues,
Ideally each Continent should have a champion Institute or Institutes with the responsibility for maintaining an e-network for PPR-GREN. Such Institutes are likely to have the capacity and even the existing mandate to sustainably fulfil such a role, particularly if there is support, inputs and encouragement from FAO and OIE. AU-IBAR is an obvious candidate for Africa with its existing close links with ILRI and AU-PANVAC. As per my previous posts I would like to see training and continuing education being strongly supported amongst the roles any such e-network continues to perform.
At risk of a slapped wrist, or worse, from the Moderator for procrastination I would also like to suggest that there should be interest in establishing similar e-networks for other “TADs, Zoonosis and Livelihood Limiting diseases” of importance to the continent in question. Members of the respective networks would logically be those for which the given disease was specific to their work, be it field, management, industry, teaching or research.
The AU-IBAR has just uploaded a “Transboundary Animal Diseases and Zoonosis Compendium for Africa” which addresses 39 such diseases, inclusive of PPR [http://www.au-ibar.org/tools/transboundary-animal-diseases-and-zoonoses-compendium-for-africa]. These, along with the recently launched AFRVIP [http://www.afrivip.org/] represent two extremely useful, accessible and current knowledge bases that can underpin any training and continuing education programme. It would be good to see these knowledge bases critiqued, improved and promoted by the e-networks keeping the information they provide current and relevant.
With best wishes to all
Chris
