Subject: Night of solidarity to support colleagues in L3 emergencies
Dear all,
Colleagues in Rome have come together through a fundraising event to support friends and colleagues in the Level 3 emergencies in Central African Republic, South Sudan and Syria.
This “Night of Solidarity” will take place on Friday 28 March from 18.00 pm to 2.00 am in the HQ Gazebo.
National Staff Associations in the three countries have welcomed the initiative and when asked how they might use the funds, they have all come up with meaningful ways to support those in need:
In CAR they considering purchasing clothing and other essentials to be donated to two IDP sites, one “Christian” and one “Muslim”, to express sympathy with IDPs, confirm their neutrality as humanitarian workers, and demonstrate solidarity within their own office “where Christians and Muslims are working together despite our differences”.
In South Sudan they are considering to use the contributions to kick-start the creation of a National Staff Association benevolent fund for staff in need of small loans. If significant funds are generated they would also consider providing support to certain colleagues who have suffered great personal loss including total destruction of their homes.
In Syria they are considering to use the majority of the proceeds to provide nutritious food to children in selected shelters, and the remaining amount to generate a second round of fund raising among the UN/International Community, through the establishment of a “revolving fund” to support future events.
The highlight of the evening will be a concert performed by Charley Anderson, formerly of English band The Selecter and long-standing supporter of humanitarian causes. Charley has been involved in social issues throughout his career, working creatively through his song writing to promote race and gender equality and human rights. He is a strong promoter of WFP and has performed in Peru, Nicaragua and most recently, Ecuador, where he was the guest of honour at the annual International Afro Music and Dance Festival in Esmeraldas.
The night will also include salsa and hip-hop dance exhibitions and a live DJ playing some great music to dance to.
Dinner will be provided by the UN Women’s Guild (Africa and Asia Pacific groups).
The entrance is €25, including dinner and dance. Tickets are currently on sale every day at lunch time, between the newsstand and the elevators. They will also be available at the door.
We’re counting on all of us to demonstrate our solidarity with and generosity to those friends and colleagues working in extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances, making sacrifices every day to ensure that our emergency assistance reaches the people who need it most.
So please let’s dig into our hearts and pockets to enthusiastically support this event!
PS: Volunteers needed to work during the evening. Shifts will be staggered so volunteers can work just 1 or 2 hours each.
