Dear Right to Food Supporters,

Today we would like to share with you the first five comments received for the online discussion Spaces for dialogue on food security at the municipal level.

Participants are sharing interesting insights from their own countries on the role that spaces for dialogue can have in these different contexts. Please find below a short recap of the comments; to read them in full and in their original language click on the link below each summary.

In this discussion we invite you to share your ideas on the role that municipal councils, committees, commissions and working groups can play as spaces for dialogue promoting participation in the definition of local food and nutrition security policies.

Carlos Alberto introduces us to a FAO project that saw the participation of the municipality, a farmers´ organization and NGOs and which had a significant impact in support of an agricultural fair (local market, with direct relationship with consumers). An awareness campaign on the importance of supporting the fair, the consumption of fresh products and fruits, and the cultural contribution of the different products from diverse regions of origin was launched, achieving greater participation and involvement of the population in the fair. Spaces for dialogue can help the local department of agriculture, the NGOs, CBOs and development departments of the municipality establish an exchange to facilitate access to land for the community members. Donald shares with us the experience from Mwanza, Tanzania where "Food Forums" are conducted twice a year, bringing together community representatives, local government authorities, the private sector, NGOs and the media to discuss trends of food parameters, investments and institutional collaborations. The Municipal Council leads the process, inviting stakeholders and hosting the forum. The forums are now becoming "Food Governance forums" and generate useful information for municipal food planning while promoting multistakeholder collaboration and increasing citizen participation in development planning.
