Dear Subscriber, We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update: Brief commentary: ˇ In April 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 236 points, a marginal decline of only 2 points from March. With few exceptions, international rice prices were stable in the four rice market segments. The most pronounced change corresponded to the higher quality Indica rice, whose sub-index fell by 2.5 points only, or 1.2 percent. ˇ Looking at prices from the various origins, only those quoted by Thailand underwent significant changes in April. For instance, the benchmark Thai white 100%B, at USD 408 per tonne, was 5.1 percent lower, reflecting continued sales of publicly owned rice and Thailand's failure to be awarded any of the Philippines' 800 000 tonne tender on 15 April. Prices in the other major export locations were little changed. ˇ In January-April 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 235 points, which compares with 237 points in the same period last year. This relative stability masks wide variations across market segments: on the one side, prices in the higher and lower quality Indica were 8 percent and 17 percent lower, respectively, year-on-year in January-April; aromatic rice prices were down by only 1.5 percent; Japonica rice were up 14 percent. For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards.
