Hello Michael,

This is the press release about activities for World Milk Day in Colombia.

Thank you for your support and have a good WMD!!

Regards,

Jorge Andrés Martínez.

Executive Director ASOLECHE.

Press Release

ASOLECHE invites you to celebrate

World Milk Day

For the fifth consecutive year and with the growing participation

of companies throughout the country,

the dairy industry guild calls for its celebration

with activities on a national scale.

Bogotá, May 21st 2014. By recognizing one of the most important dates of this vital food group, ASOLECHE is reaffirming its commitment to continue to commemorate World Milk Day in Colombia, by extending an invitation to members of the industry to attend various community activities throughout the country, scheduled for next first June.

With this celebration of this internationally recognized date, established by the FAO, Colombia completes its fifth consecutive year: "Under the initiative of Asoleche, each year a greater number of industry companies join the celebration with a commitment to increase milk consumption, especially in children of lower classes that don’t have a chance to meet the nutritionist recommended ration of three daily glasses of milk " said Jorge Andrés Martínez, CEO of ASOLECHE.

This year, companies from Bogota, Bucaramanga, Manizales and Medellín have confirmed their participation in the celebration of World Milk Day. Through Asoleche’s Twitter account (@asoleche), the public will be informed of the activities that will mark the celebration of a most important event of the dairy industry in the 2014 calendar.

Asoleche has a positive balance for the first quarter of 2014: purchases of milk from domestic producers grew by 6.16% over the same period of 2013. "Thus, in the first three months of the year, the industry bought 783 million liters of milk produced throughout the country, which represents an increase of 45 million liters" Martínez said.

In 2013, the dairy industry bought 3.1 billion liters of milk from Colombian farmers, increasing purchases at 7.11% compared to 2012. Of the total amount of milk produced, herds from the highland tropics (Cundiboyacense highland, Coffee growing region and Narińo) were responsible for 2.3 billion liters, while herds from the low tropics (Caribbean, Santander region and Eastern region) for 716 million liters of milk.

Dairy Outlook is a service of FAO’s  Trade and Markets Division

Hi All,

In Ethiopia, it is going to be celebrated through the help of USAID's financial support and in collaboration with various NGOs and milk processors. A lot of activities are planned to create awareness among the population on the benefits of consuming milk, of which Q & A on national TV is one.

I will share you the outcomes soon.

Have a great 'World Milk Day'!

Reports on celebrations planned for World Milk Day are still few and far between.

As an example, and inspiration, here’s a link to a family-run day in the Philippines.

https://kulitrunner.wordpress.com/2014/04/25/alaska-world-milk-day-family-run-june-1-2014/

I’m currently thinking about joining my daughter in the 10 km run that takes place in Rome on 31 December … at the moment, I would only be a (poor) candidate for the 3 km (family) – still, I’ve still got another seven months to prepare.

Have a good weekend.

Subject: World Milk Day, 1 June: Libya - first year holding celebrations

Dairy Outlook is a service of FAO’s  Trade and Markets Division

Could you please send me any information you may have on world milk day to support activities we are running in Libya (who are participating for the first time). Can you tell me the number of countries participating this year Any special events taking place elsewhere around the world and any facts and figures about milk (nutritional, global dairy production etc) that we can use to broadcast on a radio station throughout the day.

Many thanks

…….Reply from Michael:

Hello David,  Thank you for your message (see below). In fact, World Milk Day was vaguely floating about at the back of my mind this morning, so I’m pleased that your enquiry also lets me remind others on the List that it is imminent:  1 June.

Some of your questions (plus some you haven’t asked) may be answered in the message scroll below.   Regarding activities planned for this year, as usual we have very little information at this point – as we tend to receive this after the event.  Therefore, the best thing to do is to refer to the summaries of previous years – see link below.

Regarding milk’s role in nutrition, FAO recently published a book on this theme:  http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/i3396e/i3396e.pdf

On Monday, I will send out a note on FAO’s latest market situation report for milk and dairy products – from this you will be able to access figures on global milk production.  If you need more detailed information, this is available at the FAOSTAT website:  http://faostat3.fao.org/faostat-gateway/go/to/download/G1/*/E

In closing, I would remind all members to let me have details of planned events, so that I can circulate these to the List.

Happy World Milk Day!

Michael

=====================

World Milk Day, 1 June

Dairy Outlook is a service of FAO’s  Trade and Markets Division

Thank you to Anne-Sophie for providing us with this information on how France plans to celebrate World Milk Day (1 June).  I would encourage everyone to send in information, so that we can share it with list members and perhaps provide inspiration.

Regarding the questions Anne-Sophie raises:

-  Is it possible to use the FAO World Milk Day logo on our various communication materials ? Have you got a French version with high definition?

There is no official logo for World Milk Day (or World School Milk Day).  Therefore, countries and individuals are free to design their own.  Here are some examples, to provide inspiration!   World Milk Day images

-   Have you prepared a 2013 report of the different national events that were organized ? Or do you intend to write it ? We’d like to be able to provide it to journalists and it would be preferable to have the most up-to-date information.

We will prepare an update summarising events in 2013; however, this may not be until the beginning of May.  In the meantime, I suggest members combine information from previous summaries:  http://www.fao.org/economic/est/est-commodities/dairy/school-milk/14th-world-milk-day/en/

Events tend to be similar from year-to-year, so I believe this provides a good basis to work on until the 2013 summary is published.

Looking forward to receiving your reports on World Milk Day and World School Milk Day (24 September) preparations!

Dear Michael,

After having followed the different events from other countries for years, we have the pleasure to inform you that in France, the liquid milk sector will organize a national event for the 14th World Milk Day (1 June) . Around ten liquid milk factories will open their doors to the public around 1st June. They are spread across France. It will be a way for people to see how a bottle or a carton of milk comes to be, from the cow to the finished product. Different activities will be organized by factories (visit of the factory; educational presentations of the sector’s upstream process; games for young people; a milk bar with modern flavours;…). The National Interbranch Organisation will participate by providing different tools to be used or given out (documentation; posters;….).

And in order to ensure the visibility of all these openings, we have planned several press events, at the national and local level :

-              A national press conference to promote this 14th World Milk Day and all positive aspects of liquid milk (nutrition; how to consume it;…)

-              A press trip offered to journalists to visit a farm and a liquid milk factory.

This whole process is aimed at promoting the benefits of milk with these different aspects. My members have considered that the 14th World Milk Day is a good opportunity to do so.

Two practical questions for Michael :

-              Is it possible to use the FAO World Milk Day logo on our various communication materials ? Have you got a French version with high definition?

-              Have you prepared a 2013 report of the different national events that were organized ? Or do you intend to write it ? We’d like to be able to provide it to journalists and it would be preferable to have the most up-to-date information.

Thank you in advance.

I would also be interested in finding out about some of the other national events for 2014 !

I remain at your disposal for further information.

Best regards,

Anne-Sophie Royant

Dear Members,

As we move into the year, I would like to remind everyone to mark World Milk Day (1 June) and World School Milk Day (24 September) in their diaries.

Remember, it’s up to you to decide what type of celebration you wish to hold – this could be anything from a Press Release to a national event.

In order to get some inspiration, details of previous years’ events are contained at:

14th World Milk Day, 1 June

http://www.fao.org/economic/est/est-commodities/dairy/school-milk/14th-world-milk-day/en/

15th World School Milk Day, 24 September

http://www.fao.org/economic/est/est-commodities/dairy/school-milk/15th-world-school-milk-day-wsmd/en/

As you will see, these Days have been around for fifteen years – so children who participated in the first school milk days would now be young adults.  Therefore, new ideas to bring spontaneity and excitement are always welcome.

Also, once you have planned a celebration, we would be very happy to hear about it, so that we can publicise it via the e-network and provide inspiration to others.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Michael
