Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:
ˇ In May 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 235 points, 2 points less than in April. The slight decline was caused by falling Japonica prices, with the corresponding sub-index shedding 6 points. The other sub-indices were either stable, as in the case of aromatic rice, or rising marginally in the case of, both, the higher quality and lower quality Indica (up 2 points and 1 point respectively).
ˇ Prices in Thailand tended to weaken further in May, as the provisional government put large volumes of rice from public stocks on sale. Particularly hit by the suspension of the pledging programme were the fully broken rice, with prices of the A1 Super edging 3 percent lower over the month. By contrast, rice export prices firmed in India, Pakistan and Viet Nam. In the Americas, prices were generally steady.
ˇ In January-May 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 235 points, only two points less than in the same period last year. However, the sub-indices showed large variations year on year, with prices in the higher and lower quality Indica down 8 percent and 17 percent respectively, aromatic rice prices 2 percent lower and Japonica rice 14 percent higher.
For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards. Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 83 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
