International prices of wheat and maize dropped in June reflecting favourable prospects for the 2014 global production, while rice quotations increased slightly. Overall, cereal export prices were lower than their year-earlier levels.
International cereal prices are unlikely to increase significantly should an El Niño event develop later this year as the bulk of the 2014 grain crops will already be gathered and cereal stocks, mainly rice, are plentiful.
In Somalia, prices of coarse grains continued the upward trend of recent months, surging in June in the capital Mogadishu. Unfavourable prospects for the upcoming 2014 main season coarse grains harvest and trade disruptions due to insecurity underpinned prices.
