CA-CoP CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

for sustainable production intensification

Dear Subscribers,

Please see herebelow a self-explanatory message from Tom Goddard, Senior Policy Advisor, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Canada, regarding FAO newsletter for climate change in agriculture requesting folks to complete an online survey.  It is 12 pages of questions testing ideas for resource books (and other knowledge products) on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and asking if you want to help write/produce the materials.

CA-CoP members interested in the CA-CSA linkages may want to participate in the questionnaire by joining the FAO- MICCA list.  The questionnaire is available at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/58VRF6Q

Dear Amir

Following is a posting from the FAO community newsletter for climate change in agriculture.

Note they are asking for participants to complete an online survey - which I did.  It is 12 pages of questions testing ideas for resource books (and other knowledge products) on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and asking if you want to help write/produce the materials.  I foresee an avalanche of climate change + agriculture material in our future from a wide range of organizations and interest groups…!  FAO, World Bank  already have lots of publications, not to mention all the NGOs that are contributing as well.

I also noted at the questionnaire site, they provide a link to the summary slides of previous feedback from an online discussion (16 slides).  Slide 8 shows that CA was one of the top three areas for further attention (‘priority one’).  The 6th point under ‘General Remarks’ (slide 13) refers to the need to share experiences and information across country boundaries.  Something you are doing with CA-CoP!

It seems this FAO initiative wants to enlist everyone else’s expertise to help them create an ongoing team of writers/producers of extension material for every country.  They should consider everything that has already been developed and ask, “where do we fit”, “what more is needed”?  Nevertheless, I wonder if there would be opportunity to promote CA or at least watch and make sure CA is fairly represented.

The survey asked a question about compiling success stories of CSA.  I countered with the comment, maybe what we need is a listing of failures or characteristics that resulted in failures such as only trying to implement part of a CA system or, failing to secure long term funding for weather monitoring.  I recall participating in an international food security meeting earlier this year and we broke up into groups to discuss factors of success of projects.  We assembled the predictable list.  I countered with suggesting a meeting to consider factors of failure – it is said we learn more from our failures than successes so, why not complement a ‘success factors’ list with another list of things to be wary of in project design?

CA-CoP members interested in the CA-CSA linkages may want to participate in the questionnaire by joining the FAO- MICCA list.  I suspect the link below is a personal link (only a single use access).  CA-CoP members could send in unsolicited comments to the MICCA email address as well – I’m sure they appreciate any and all constructive comments or feedback.

Best regards,

Tom

Dear colleagues,

FAO and CGIAR's  Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) cordially invite you to share your ideas on key knowledge products to be developed for the wider implementation of the Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) approach. To do so, kindly participate in the following questionnaire: www.surveymonkey.com/s/58VRF6Q

This questionnaire has been developed as a second step towards meeting knowledge needs for CSA, and builds on the results of our first questionnaire held in April 2014. Both previous and new respondents are welcome to participate in the current questionnaire, which will be open until Thursday, 9 October. It should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. Please feel free to share the questionnaire widely among your networks - thank you for your support! www.surveymonkey.com/s/58VRF6Q

Kind regards,

Alashiya Gordes
