FAO joins with AU-IBAR and ILRI on regional strategy for the control of African swine fever in Africa
Since 2008, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established two regional networks to coordinate animal health work in the Eastern Africa region. One is the Eastern Africa Regional Epidemiology Network (EAREN), which concerns surveillance for early detection and reporting of animal diseases in order to enable planning, regional coordination and harmonization. The second regional network is the Eastern Africa Regional Laboratory Network (EARLN), which relates to early detection of diseases and disease management plans through national laboratories for diagnosis. A recently-emerged strain of avian influenza virus in poultry in Southeast Asia known as A(H5N6) represents a new threat to animal health and livelihoods and must be closely monitored, FAO said today.
