CFS COMMITTEE ON WORLD FOOD SECURITY CFS Update November 2014 Edition FAO Highlights of CFS 41 CFS 41 was the fifth annual Plenary session of CFS since the reform in 2009. Below are some of the highlights: Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems The Principles, which have been under development for two years, were endorsed by CFS 41. Formatted versions in the official languages are being prepared and awareness raising activities are being planned. More at this link: http://www.fao.org/cfs/rai CFS Policy Recommendations The Committee also endorsed policy recommendations on: * Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security and Nutrition * Food Losses and Waste in the Context of Sustainable Food Systems CFS 41 Final Report and Chair’s Summary The Final Report is available in all languages on the CFS 41 web page. Photos are on the CFS 41 Side Events page: http://www.fao.org/cfs/cfs-home/cfs41/sideevents41/en The year ahead for CFS Agenda for Action for addressing food insecurity in protracted crises CFS 41 agreed to extend the consultation and negotiation period leading up to endorsement by CFS 42 in October 2015. The Second Draft (Co-Chairs’ Proposal) is posted in Engilsh at this link (other languages will be posted shortly): http://www.fao.org/cfs/cfs-home/cfs-fipc/en/ CFS Monitoring CFS Effectiveness CFS 41 approved the roll out of activities that will measure the effectiveness of CFS. This includes a baseline survey to be completed by CFS constituencies at the global, regional and national levels which will be rolled out in early 2015. CFS High-Level Forum on Connecting Smallholders to Market The aim of this High-Level Forum is to discuss core issues, major challenges and ways to improve the access of smallholders to markets based on the experience of different stakeholders. The forum will be held on 25 June 2015. Building knowledge, skills and talent development to further food security and nutrition This event will bring together a diverse range of stakeholders to discuss capacity building and talent development in the agricultural sector through a food security and nutrition lens. This event will be held during CFS 42. HLPE News Renewal of the HLPE Steering Committee Following CFS 42 in October 2015, the Steering Committee of the HLPE will be renewed for a 2-year term. A call for nomination of experts is open until 31 January 2015. There is also an electronic consultation on the scope of the report. Both are open until 15 Jan 2015: http://www.fao.org/cfs/cfs-hlpe Sustainable Forestry for Food Security and Nutrition Between 15 Jan and 15 Feb 2015, there will be a call for experts for the Project Team and a consultation on the scope of the Report which will feed into CFS 44 in 2017.
