Avian influenza A(H5N6): the latest addition to emerging zoonotic avian influenza threats in East and Southeast Asia

[cid:image007.jpg@01CFFA9F.F489A840]The first outbreak of a novel highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N6 was reported in China in May 2014. Since then, the virus has spread to Lao PDR and Viet Nam, where it quickly spread over 6 different provinces. So far, one human case of H5N6 was detected in China. These H5N6 viruses are very similar to novel H5N1 viruses in Viet Nam and to H5N8 viruses, detected recently in Japan and Korea. With winter season approaching in Eastern Asia, the prevalence and spread of H5N6 virus in poultry is expected to rise, increasing both chances for human exposure...[Read full report<http://www.fao.org/3/a-i4199e.pdf>]
