Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:

ˇ In October 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 235 points, down another 1.4 percent from the 238 point recorded in September and the second consecutive monthly decline. This time, the weakness affected all market segments, with prices falling the most for the higher quality Indica rice (-2.4 percent), followed by the lower quality Indica (-1.6 percent), fragrant rice (-1.3 percent) and Japonica rice (-0.8 percent).

ˇ International rice prices subsided in virtually all the major exporting countries, with particularly marked falls observed in the United States, coinciding with the harvest and influenced by the low prices seen in other cereal markets. Rice prices also dipped in Asian origins, in particular Pakistan and India. Unlike in previous months, Thai quotations were more resilient and even strengthened in the case of the fully broken Thai A1 super. The general price slide mainly reflected the prospects of generally abundant supplies, even in those countries heading towards a lower 2014 harvests, and a slowing down of sales.

ˇ Between January and October 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 236 points, barely one point less than in the 2013 corresponding period. With the exception of Japonica prices, which strengthened by 13 percent year-on-year, prices averaged less in all the other markets: down by 12.0 percent for the Lower Quality Indica, 5.4 percent for the Higher Quality Indica and 0.8 percent for Aromatic rice.
