Dear all,
I
just want to bring to your attention information about an upcoming
conference that I think would be of interest to a number of you.
Open
burning is a serious problem in many parts of the world. It has serious
health impacts, it is risky, it affects the climate, in particular
melting of glaciers in the Himalayas, the Andes and the Arctic and it
affects the soil by among other things decreasing humus content and
reducing yield.
This conference is about what we can do to get farmers who burns to choose alternative non-burning methods in the wider Himalayan region. We have been running a similar project in Russia and successfully demonstrated the advantages of conservation agriculture as an alternative to burning to farmers.
The Conference on Open Agricultural Burning in the Wider Himalayan Region will focus on
· Characterizing burning using completed mapping combined with regional expert input: who burns what, where and why
· Identifying potential mitigation options, e.g. conservation agriculture, and barriers
· Identifying key actors and stakeholders as well as establish partnerships
· Help in raising regional awareness of the impacts and importance of open
The Conference is organized by ICCI and ICIMOD in cooperation with FAO.
Please find attached an Announcement of the Conference.
Welcome!
