Thank you to Serena for sending in this information on Senegal. I invite other members of the list to study the links below and provide their comments – for example, how applicable would this type of project be to other countries in the region and elsewhere?
Serena’s report is very interesting from several points of view:
· it appears that this small project is the only dairy in Senegal (a country with a population of 14 million) using locally produced milk.
· the milk is distributed to children as thiakry a regional product based on yogurt and millet/couscous which is fortified with vitamins.
· support is provided a Danone social development fund.
· the thiakry is distributed in tubes to the children (see video)
In the YouTube Video - School Feeding in Senegal<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ghjLki_NaI#t=11> it is not clear if the thiakry is in UHT or pasteurized tubes. Perhaps someone could answer this?
Some links to what thiakry is an how it is made are given below:

Dear all,

I am writing a book chapter about a school yogurt program in Tanzania and its collaboration with smallholder farmers. I am wondering if any of you have publications, or information relating to school milk programs in Africa, or the developing world in general? I am interested to read about experiences in other countries on how they coordinate, fund, include small dairy farmers etc. in school milk programs.

Best wishes,

Helene
