Dear Subscriber,

We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:

Brief commentary of the month:

ˇ         In March 2015, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 219 points, barely 1 point less than in February. The values of the four sub-indices representing the main rice market segments were stable compared to last month, with the Higher Quality Indica unchanged, the Lower Quality Indica marginally higher,  the aromatic rice marginally lower and Japonica rice down 1 percent.

ˇ         The pattern of export prices was more differentiated across countries of origin. Prices in March generally weakened in Thailand,  a reflection of sluggish import demand and of the auctioning of government stock supplies, and in India, ahead of the Rabi harvest.  In the United States and South American countries, prices in March were stable to lower, pressured in South  by the arrival on the market of the new crop.  Prices held steadier in Pakistan and Viet Nam, supported in the latter by the launching of the official 1 million tonne paddy procurement round.

ˇ         According to the FAO Index, international rice prices in the first three months of 2015 were 5.8 percent lower than their corresponding value in 2014. All the segments saw prices fall, except Japonica rice, the supplies of which remain tight, especially in view of the recent tenders launched by Japan and the Republic of Korea. The general price weakness since the beginning of the year, is also an expression of the strength of the US dollar, which, as numerator of international prices, translates domestic currency prices into lower US dollar equivalent. However, the weakness of local currencies also affected market fundamentals, by hindering the ability to buy rice from international markets of many importers, including Brazil and western African countries.

For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database  http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards.  Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 92 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
