Dear Members,

The Social Protection Division (ESP) of FAO would like to invite you to participate to the global study “Harnessing the Role of Rural Organizations in Social Protection”, conducted under FAO’s strategic objective “Reduce Rural Poverty”.

The study aims to achieve a better understanding of local solutions and processes for providing social protection to the rural poor through formal and informal rural organizations, and how those can be harnessed for improving the targeting and coverage of social protection systems in rural areas. The study will identify and document existing experiences and develop an inventory of good practices on the role of rural organizations in social protection.

This call for proposals is issued to all FAO technical divisions, FAO’s decentralized offices, and interested development agencies and other external partners, inviting colleagues to participate in this study and submit proposals for good practices.

The objective of this study is to build a knowledge base for policymakers and development practitioners to assess the potential for rural organisations to participate in the design, implementation and monitoring of social protection to the rural poor.

You will find further details on the background and context of the study in the concept note.

We invite you to provide your feedback on the following main questions using the forms provided (Form AForm B):

1.     What tasks do/can rural organisations perform in national social protection programs?
(Form A)

2.     What collective practices of risk management contribute to improving the resilience of the rural poor, and to protecting their livelihoods and assets in times of need? (Form B)

The outcome of this study will be presented in a series of products:

·        Technical notes documenting selected practices

·        An analytical report highlighting key success factors and lesson learned

·        A policy brief

·        An online consultation engaging external experts and practitioners on this topic

Please send your feedback to [log in to unmask] no later than Friday 29th of May 2015

Detailed instructions for developing and submitting your proposal are in the forms.

This call and all documents are also available in French and Spanish.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch for any further information or clarification.
