The Microsoft Excel-based tool uses smartly designed tables and charts to provide information on the aquaculture production (both volume and value) of nearly 900 species or species groups in nearly 300 countries or country groups spanning over 60 years, from 1950 to the present. The tool is a module under the World Aquaculture Performance Indicators (WAPI); details about the WAPI initiative and a prototype WAPI tool can be found in the "Report of the FAO expert workshop on assessment and monitoring of aquaculture sector performance Gaeta, Italy, 5-7 November 2012<http://www.fao.org/3/a-i3539e.pdf>". If you would like to test the module and/or learn more about WAPI, please send a request to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. [cid:image002.jpg@01D0BE41.927A88C0]Projects FAO is participating in two Horizon 2020 projects; one of the projects is entitled "Ecosystem Approach to making Space for Aquaculture" (AquaSpace) and the other "Marine Investment for the Blue Economy" (MARIBE). * The main objective of the AquaSpace project is to provide increased space for aquaculture by adopting the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA) and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) to deliver food security and increased employment opportunities through economic growth. AquaSpace will work in collaboration with the aquaculture industry, other stakeholders, and coastal managers and planners in the European Economic Area and beyond to produce a range of tools that will enable effective implementation of EAA and MSP to support the aquaculture sector. A total of 16 case studies from different countries with a range of scales, environments and space-related development constraints as defined by local stakeholders will be assessed to improve and/or create appropriate tools using a common process so as to facilitate synthesis and comparison. The AquaSpace project started in March 2015 and will have a duration of 36 months. The project coordinator is the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), the number of consortium partners is 21. FAO is a project partner. FAO does not lead the consortium or a work package. FAO's tasks will be to: (i) prepare a review of current approaches to spatial planning for aquaculture in marine and freshwater environments in Europe plus non EU Mediterranean and Black Sea countries, covering the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) area of competence; and (ii) conduct a workshop to present and validate the results of the review. Massa [cid:image004.gif@01D0BE41.927A88C0] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> * The primary objective of this MARIBE project is to identify the most promising business models in the Blue Growth (BG) economy, by combining different, complementary and synergistic activities at sea at the same location (e.g. energy production and storage, fisheries and aquaculture, transport and logistics hubs) via multi-use of space and multi-use offshore platforms. Conflicts for use of the marine space and licensing in the context of marine spatial planning are one of the core elements of the project. The project will be conducted in four basins: the Baltic, Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea, and Caribbean. MARIBE will select four of the best business models (one per basin) to demonstrate the most optimal combined use of space. The project will then develop the business models to be rolled out in pilot projects. The MARIBE project started in March 2015 and will have a duration of 18 months. The project coordinator is the University College Cork (UCC), the number of consortium participants is 10. FAO does not lead the consortium or a work package. FAO's tasks are to: (i) provide inputs to different work packages to ensure the inclusion/relevance of aquaculture and Non-EU countries and (ii) lead the organization of one workshop for the Caribbean Basin. FIRA's Alessandro Lovatelli and Integrated Aquaculture Consultant Edoardo Pantanella worked with SNG's Fishery and Aquaculture Officer David Currie to prepare the analysis and recommendations on a way forward to develop commercially successful and environmentally sustainable aquaculture ventures in the area, in order to bring the farms back to productive use. A GCP project to carry the work forward is in preparation. The United Arab Emirates plans a major expansion of aquaculture over the next decade, prioritizing the sector as a key component in addressing the country's food security needs. Advanced technologies for recirculating closed system aquaculture will allow fish production with minimum usage of the region's scarce freshwater resources. Information: D.
