Dear Members and Colleagues,
Today we would like to share with you some highlights of the comments received so far to the online discussion "Food Security, Gender and Peace-Building<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/discussions/gender-and-peace-building>" promoted by FAO and the Institute of Development Studies.
We invite you to take advantage of this last week to enter the discussion and to share your views on how food security, gender equality and peace-building interact.
Do you have examples of projects, programmes or policies that address the issues of food security, gender equality and peace-building, and the links between them?
Could addressing the different food security and nutrition priorities of women and men, girls and boys help prevent the onset of violent conflict?

Emile states that there is a clear connection between food security and peace. Conflicts lead to food insecurity while hunger constitutes one of the biggest threats to peace.
As women are often responsible for the food security of the whole household, which determines the cohesion and wellbeing of the family, the impact of conflicts on women is a particular concern. In fact, conflicts impact more on women, who suffer rape, and harm the health of their children.
In addition, particular in Africa, production by women is generally more oriented towards food crops than that of men, further increasing the negative effect that conflicts affecting women can have on food security. [...]

Ahnna gives us an insight on the P4P programme in Liberia where more than a decade of civil war had left the agricultural sector in pieces. The few remaining farmers’ groups were loosely organized and struggled to produce quality rice in sufficient quantities. Building trust among smallholders and enabling them to work collectively and take ownership of their businesses turned out to be a big challenge but also an achievement of the programme. [...]
