The GIEWS (FAO) site has interesting country updates as well as access to the price tool: http://www.fao.org/giews/english/index.htm. Other price updates (international) can be found at: http://www.fao.org/economic/est/prices

Quarterly Early Warning Bulleting for Food and Agriculture (July-September 2015): http://www.fao.org/food-chain-crisis/early-warning-bulletin/en/.  To be loaded soon.

Also for those who are interested,  ERS (of the US Department of Agriculture) has an interesting article about international agricultural productivity (http://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/international-agricultural-productivity.aspx).  It  is dated but the discussions on estimating total factor productivity are important.

Also the ERS’s data site is very interesting to review: http://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products.aspx. They keep excellent statistics while FAS/USDA (the Foreign Ag Service) maintains the international Production, Supply and Demand estimates which are very easy to download: https://apps.fas.usda.gov/psdonline/.  This database contains current and historical official USDA data on production, supply and distribution of agricultural commodities for the United States and key producing and consuming countries.

HIGHLIGHTS

http://www.fao.org/common/images/spacer.gif

http://www.fao.org/common/images/spacer.gif

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/cpfs/I4773e/bullet_red.gifProspects for world cereal production in 2015 remain favourable, despite recent adverse weather conditions in some regions and continuing concerns over El Niño, with the global cereal supply and demand outlook for 2015/16 pointing to generally stable conditions.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/cpfs/I4773e/bullet_red.gifExport prices of wheat and maize generally increased in June on concerns about the impact of unfavourable weather yield potential. By contrast, international prices of rice weakened further mainly because of weak import demand. Cereal prices in June remained well below their year-earlier levels, reflecting the continuing overall positive outlook for this year’s production.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/cpfs/I4773e/bullet_red.gifAFRICA: Cereal production in 2015 is forecast below last year’s bumper crop, largely reflecting a sharp reduction in Southern Africa due to adverse weather. Delayed onset of seasonal rains in West Africa has also raised concern over production prospects. Similarly, in East Africa, lower outputs are forecast due to poor rains while the food security situation in South Sudan is very alarming, especially in conflict-affected areas. A rebound in North Africa’s cereal output, mainly wheat, is projected to prevent a steeper decline at the regional level, while a small increase is also forecast in Central Africa, despite persistent and disruptive conflicts.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/cpfs/I4773e/bullet_red.gifASIA: The overall cereal production outlook in 2015 remains positive, mostly on account of a record output forecast in China. However, recent dry weather has dampened prospects in India and several countries of the Far East subregion. In the Near East, 2015 production is expected to recover from last year’s drought-affected output, but escalating conflicts in Iraq, Syria and Yemen exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/cpfs/I4773e/bullet_red.gifLATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN: Prospects point to an above-average 2015 crop in South America, but below the bumper level of 2014. While the outlook is also positive in Mexico, the presence of El Niño has lowered expectations in the rest of Central America; however, this year’s output is still tentatively forecast to increase from the drought-affected 2014 crop.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/cpfs/I4773e/bullet_red.gifFAO estimates that, globally, 34 countries, including 28 in Africa, are in need of external assistance for food.

KEY MESSAGES

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/imgs/orangebox.gif Export prices of wheat and maize mostly increased in June on concerns about the impact on crops of unfavourable weather during the month in major producing countries. By contrast, international prices of rice weakened further, mainly because of weak import demand. In general, cereal prices in June remained well below their year-earlier levels, reflecting the overall continuing positive outlook for this year’s production.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/imgs/orangebox.gif In East Africa, maize prices in Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda declined in June, after sharp increases in the previous months, as a result of recent imports and the ongoing 2015 harvests, which are, however, expected at below-average levels.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/imgs/orangebox.gif In Southern Africa, maize price increases persisted in June in the main producer South Africa, as markets continued to respond to the tighter supply outlook in the marketing year 2015/16, following the sharply-reduced maize production this year. Elsewhere in the subregion, prices decreased seasonally, reflecting new supplies from the nearly-completed 2015 harvests.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/imgs/orangebox.gif In West Africa, strong increases in cereal prices were recorded in coastal countries in recent months, reflecting uncertain prospects for the 2015 first season crops, due to delayed rains, as well as depreciation of the national currencies.

http://www.fao.org/giews/english/imgs/orangebox.gif In Central America and the Caribbean, prices of maize generally increased in June and remained significantly above their year-earlier level. Prices of beans strengthened in most countries and in the Dominican Republic reached record levels, underpinned by a reduced 2014/15 harvest and low imports.
