CA-CoP CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

for sustainable production intensification

Dear Subscribers,

Tom Goddard, Senior Policy Advisor at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has brought the following to my notice for sharing with CA-CoP subscribers.

It relates to the UN Global Compact organisation focussed on getting the corporate world involved in sustainability.

I hope some of you will take the survey which takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Dear Amir,

The following notice is posted in a Sustainable Agriculture group of LinkedIn.  I thought you would like to see it and perhaps take the survey (note – survey closes on Aug 13).

It is about the UN Global Compact organisation which appears to be focused on getting the corporate world involved in sustainability.

The blurb on the survey is below.  At their homepage they say they engaged a lot of soil specialists to develop the strategy and questionnaire.  Hopefully some of the CA-CoP colleagues were involved…(?!)  There appears to be no mention of FAO or other international agency interested in soil conservation/management.

Take part in a UN survey on what is sustainable soil management

Building on the Global Compact’s Food and Agriculture Business (FAB) Principles, the Global Compact is facilitating the development of voluntary Business Principles for Sustainable Soil Management (Soil Principles).

All stakeholders are invited to take an active part in the development of the Soil Principles by participating in the online survey. The online consultation will be open for feedback until 13 August 2015.

Here is the link to the survey introduction page at the UN Global Compact: site:  https://www.unglobalcompact.org/take-action/action/sustainable-soil-management?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=UN+Global+Compact+Bulletin+-+August+2015+Subscribers&utm_content=UN+Global+Compact+Bulletin+-+August+2015+Subscribers+CID_80246f1233f325de96d1919d3f2e56f0&utm_source=Monthly%20Bulletin&utm_term=participating%20in%20the%20online%20survey

I skimmed through the survey and see there is a page of questions on each of their eight Principles, followed by a page asking general questions about the participant profile.

Principle 1. Protect soil from physical and chemical degradation including erosion.

Principle 2. Restore soils on degraded and marginal lands.

Principle 3. Maintain soil-based ecosystem services including water availability and quality.

Principle 4. Enhance the productivity of soils in accordance with their natural capacity.

Principle 5. Develop extension services, knowledge systems and promote innovation.

Principle 6.  Promote human rights, land tenure and access, and the right to a sustaining livelihood.

Principle 7. Reduce food loss and waste.

Principle 8. Communicate the importance of soil, strengthen public-private partnerships and ensure access to markets.

I think it would be a good awareness item for CA-CoP.  I completed the survey and it seems to be focussed on the private sector, based upon the contributor profile questions at the end.  I am not sure how many non-corporate respondents they want but, they can always filter out those based upon how the profile questions are answered.

You may also want to look at their upcoming events page for items such as their August 14 webinar, "A framework to advance sustainable food and agriculture systems."

Best regards,

Tom
