This article reviews crop residue management practices, mainly surface retention, incorporation or removal, describing their advantages and limitations in cereal-based agroecosystems in developing countries. They conclude that interventions such as intensification, partial retention, improved return of nutrients from manures, and the provision of substitutes to the current functions of livestock (e.g. mechanization, insurance) could reduce these residue trade-offs in favor of promoting long-term soil health. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990255/2015/08/23/crop-residue-management-and-soil-health-a-systems-analysis?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049990255?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049990255?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049990255?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049990255&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Impact of organic no-till vegetables systems on soil organic matter in the Atlantic Forest biome <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990242/2015/08/23/impact-of-organic-no-till-vegetables-systems-on-soil-organic-matter-in-the-atlantic-forest-biome?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> From www.sciencedirect.com <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S030442381400675X?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> - August 23, 10:10 PM <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990242/2015/08/23/impact-of-organic-no-till-vegetables-systems-on-soil-organic-matter-in-the-atlantic-forest-biome?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> A. With a view to sustainable development in Indian agriculture, CA is being promoted. Tillage is an integral component of traditional Indian agricultural systems with a view of controlling weeds. This paper suggests that an integrated management system encompassing a selection of appropriate crop cultivar and cropping system coupled with CA principles would aid in the management of weeds. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988371/2015/08/23/chapter-four-weed-problems-ecology-and-management-options-in-conservation-agriculture-issues-and-perspectives?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049988371?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049988371?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049988371?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049988371&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Exclusion of soil macrofauna did not affect soil quality but increased crop yields in a sub-humid tropical maize-based system <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988338/2015/08/23/exclusion-of-soil-macrofauna-did-not-affect-soil-quality-but-increased-crop-yields-in-a-sub-humid-tropical-maize-based-system?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> From www.sciencedirect.com <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167880915001334?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> - August 23, 10:01 PM <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988338/2015/08/23/exclusion-of-soil-macrofauna-did-not-affect-soil-quality-but-increased-crop-yields-in-a-sub-humid-tropical-maize-based-system?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> B.K. Their role in agricultural management and CA are not well known. This study aimed to quantify soil macrofauna and its impact on soil aggregation, soil carbon and crop yields in a maize–soybean system under tropical sub-humid conditions in Western Kenya with tillage and residue retention. A macrofauna exclusion experiment was superimposed in 2005 through regular insecticide applications, The application of insecticides drastically reduced macrofauna populations. Macrofauna exclusion resulted in 34% higher maize grain yield and 22% higher soybean grain yield, indicating that pest damage – probably including termites – overruled any potentially beneficial impact of soil macrofauna. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988338/2015/08/23/exclusion-of-soil-macrofauna-did-not-affect-soil-quality-but-increased-crop-yields-in-a-sub-humid-tropical-maize-based-system?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049988338?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049988338?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049988338?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049988338&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> No-till surface runoff and soil losses in southern Brazil <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049987350/2015/08/23/no-till-surface-runoff-and-soil-losses-in-southern-brazil?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> From www.sciencedirect.com <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167198715000823?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> - August 23, 9:55 PM <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049987350/2015/08/23/no-till-surface-runoff-and-soil-losses-in-southern-brazil?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> G.H. This was a 14 year long term experiment on a well drained Oxisol. Results show that, when compared with conventional soil tillage soil losses for NT were > 70% lower. However, the benefit of reduced surface runoff losses was less evident suggesting the need to implement additional practices to control surface runoff. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049987350/2015/08/23/no-till-surface-runoff-and-soil-losses-in-southern-brazil?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049987350?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049987350?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049987350?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049987350&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Economic trade-offs of biomass use in crop-livestock systems: Exploring more sustainable options in semi-arid Zimbabwe <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988295/2015/08/23/economic-trade-offs-of-biomass-use-in-crop-livestock-systems-exploring-more-sustainable-options-in-semi-arid-zimbabwe?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> From www.sciencedirect.com <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308521X14000894?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> - August 23, 9:50 PM <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988295/2015/08/23/economic-trade-offs-of-biomass-use-in-crop-livestock-systems-exploring-more-sustainable-options-in-semi-arid-zimbabwe?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Sabine Homann-Kee Tui, Diego Valbuena, Patricia Masikati, Katrien Descheemaeker, Justice Nyamangara, Lieven Claessens, Olaf Erenstein, Andre van Rooyen, and Daniel Nkomboni. 2015. There is competing farm uses for this resource. This paper looks at the social and household level trade-offs for the residues in Mexico at the regional, community and household levels. In Mexico residues are important for animal feed and also income. Partial residue retention as mulch is discussed for CA. CA seeding systems based on animal traction excelled and significantly increased maize productivity by up to 235% (1761 kg ha-1) and legume productivity by 173% (265 kg ha-1) as compared to the conventional control treatment. Soil quality indicators such as infiltration and soil carbon improved 64-96% and 29-97 %, respectively, over time. They conclude that successful CA promotion requires that the systems are adapted to farmers’ circumstances. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990219/2015/08/23/where-is-the-limit-lessons-learned-from-long-term-conservation-agriculture-research-in-zimuto-communal-area-zimbabwe?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049990219?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049990219?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049990219?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049990219&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Effects of tillage and time of sowing on bread wheat, chickpea, barley and lentil grown in rotation in rainfed systems in Syria <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988361/2015/08/23/effects-of-tillage-and-time-of-sowing-on-bread-wheat-chickpea-barley-and-lentil-grown-in-rotation-in-rainfed-systems-in-syria?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> From www.sciencedirect.com <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378429015000027?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> - August 23, 10:04 PM <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988361/2015/08/23/effects-of-tillage-and-time-of-sowing-on-bread-wheat-chickpea-barley-and-lentil-grown-in-rotation-in-rainfed-systems-in-syria?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Colin Piggin, Atef Haddad, Yaseen Khalil, Stephen Loss and Mustafa Pala. 2015. But issues of retaining crop residue soil cover is difficult because of competing use of residues for animal feed. This paper uses an optimized model at the farm level to explore the trade-offs between CA and dairy cow herds in Madagascar. CA was not feasible for farms with no irrigated paddy fields or when forage fetched a high price regardless of the constraint for % of soil cover to be kept on CA fields. Overall, CA systems can be beneficial for dairy cow farmers due to the forage produced, although the milk market and thus the value of biomass for forage, has a strong influence on CA practice at field level. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988326/2015/08/23/trade-offs-around-the-use-of-biomass-for-livestock-feed-and-soil-cover-in-dairy-farms-in-the-alaotra-lake-region-of-madagascar?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049988326?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049988326?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049988326?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049988326&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> Understanding and Enhancing Soil Biological Health: The Solution for Reversing Soil Degradation <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990148/2015/08/23/understanding-and-enhancing-soil-biological-health-the-solution-for-reversing-soil-degradation?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990148/2015/08/23/understanding-and-enhancing-soil-biological-health-the-solution-for-reversing-soil-degradation?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> From www.mdpi.com <http://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/7/1/988?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> - August 23, 9:53 PM <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049990148/2015/08/23/understanding-and-enhancing-soil-biological-health-the-solution-for-reversing-soil-degradation?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> R. Yet they can also be important as mulch if left on the soil surface. This paper uses simulation models to simulate sorghum residue allocations at three scales - the plot, farm and territory. Plot scale suggests that without nitrogen, mulch has a positive effect on cotton yields when using small amounts. Greater amounts sequester nitrogen and reduce yields so addition of nitrogen is needed. At the farm scale the results are discussed in relation to number of farm animals owned. The paper then suggests optimum mulch allocations depending on number of animals owned. There is also discussion at the territory scale. <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015/p/4049988231/2015/08/23/multi-scale-trade-off-analysis-of-cereal-residue-use-for-livestock-feeding-vs-soil-mulching-in-the-mid-zambezi-valley-zimbabwe?_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/twitter/4049988231?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/facebook/4049988231?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/share/post/linkedin/4049988231?forceAnonymous=1&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> <http://www.scoop.it/t/conservation-agriculture-research-updates-august-2015?rescoopPostId=4049988231&_tmc=r5jj7guf-id3xbTXlOXepLlYJ2rbOIyll-p334MvyhY> ######################################################################## To unsubscribe from the CA-Cop-L list, click the following link: &*TICKET_URL(CA-Cop-L,SIGNOFF);
