THE DAIRY COUNCIL CELEBRATES WORLD SCHOOL MILK DAY WITH 'MILK UNDER THE MICROSCOPE' - kitchen experiments for schoolchildren showing the nutrient and structural molecules of milk

The Dairy Council invited children and parents along to Thinktank, Birmingham's award winning science museum, on Saturday 26th September to being celebrations for World School Milk Day. With the aim of promoting the importance of drinking milk to school children in a fun and educational way, nutritionists and dietitians from The Dairy Council carried out interactive experiments as part of 'Milk Under the Microscope' to allow children to visualise some of the major nutrients and structural molecules found in milk - after all, seeing is believing!
The 'Milky Wonder-Verse' experiments included the 'Dippy Litmus Test' and the 'Awesome Acid Eggs-periment', both of which draw the importance of calcium and maintaining healthy teeth. The 'Epic Sugar Weigh-in' and 'Wat's Dat Fat' assays allowed children and parents understand a little more about how to identify different macronutrients in snacks and demonstrated the need for balance in the diet. 'Building a Casein Brick' was a wonderful way of demonstrating that milk is high in protein and explaining the importance of protein for maintaining healthy muscles and bones, and for normal growth. The Dairy Council nutritionists and dietitians answered all questions parents had about the nutritional benefits of milk for school children.
The experiments can be re-created at home or in schools to encourage children to continue learning about the nutritional aspects of milk and having fun, and the experimental worksheets (available at http://www.milk.co.uk/consumers/page.aspx?intPageID=1083), along with photographs and short videos of the event in Birmingham, will be promoted on social media in the days building up to World School Milk Day to encourage school teachers and children to get involved on the day itself.
