FAO and its partners are putting an effort together to improve Rift Valley fever preparedness in the Maghreb
Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) is one of the most important infectious diseases of cattle in Africa. Some 26 countries in the continent are affected by the disease which is spreading to countries and areas where the disease has been previously eradicated or has never been reported. In affected countries, the disease has serious implications on food security and livelihoods caused by mortality, loss of milk production and drastic weight loss in chronic cases of the disease. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is backing FAO's efforts to combat pandemic animal disease threats in Asia, Africa and the Middle East with an additional $87 million in funding covering the 2015-19 period. USAID and FAO have worked in partnership on controlling animal diseases and managing related human health threats for over a decade.
