Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update.
____________________________________________________________________
Brief commentary of the month:
ˇ The FAO All Rice Price index (2002-04=100) dropped by another 3 points, or 1.7 percent, in September 2015, a relatively small fall, but which represented the thirtieth consecutive one. Prices of Aromatic rice were under the strongest pressure last month, shedding 8 points, or 4.5 percent compared to August, but quotations for the lower quality Indica also dropped markedly, by 6 points or 3.4 percent. The declines were less marked for the Higher quality Indica, which was down by 1.4 percent, and for Japonica rice, which was virtually unchanged.
ˇ In line with the general tendency, the Thai 100%B white rice benchmark price retreated by 15 points or 3.8 percent in September. Prices weakened also in the other origins, especially in Pakistan, and India, where harvesting is under way. Prices held firmer in Viet Nam and in the United States. The weakness of prices is mainly attributed to a sluggish international demand. Indeed, despite the many problems affecting crops this year, a depreciation of currencies and more difficult access to foreign exchange reserves are stalling imports.
ˇ According to the FAO All Rice Price Index, international rice prices last month were 14 percent cheaper than in September 2014. Since the beginning of the year, they have averaged 9.2 percent lower than in January-September 2014.
