Dear Subscriber,

We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update.

Brief commentary of the month:

ˇ The FAO All Rice Price index (2002-04=100) averaged 3 percent lower in October 2015, extending its uninterrupted fall record to a 14th month. The decline was mostly the result of weaker Japonica and Aromatic price indices, which shed 14 points each, corresponding to a drop of 5 percent and 8 percent, respectively. On the other hand, while the lower quality Indica price index was about unchanged around its September level, quotations of the higher quality Indica were up by 1 percent.

ˇ From an origin perspective, most of the Thai rice quotations were above last month, including that of the benchmark 100%B white rice, which gained 9 points or 3 percent, compared to September. The strengthening of Thai prices reflected commitments to fulfil a recent sale to the Philippines and expectations of a new deal with Indonesia. Confirmed purchases from the same two countries were mostly behind even sharper increases in Viet Nam's export prices. By contrast, rice quotations softened in India and Pakistan, as interest from buyers remained limited pending the arrival of the newly harvested crops. Prices in the Americas were stable to lower, especially in Argentina and Uruguay.

ˇ According to the FAO All Rice Price Index, international rice prices in October 2015 were 15 percent cheaper than in October 2014. Since the beginning of the year, the index average was 9.8 percent lower than in January-October 2014, with the decline reaching as much as 32 percent in the case of aromatic rice.
