Dear Caribbean civil society organisation colleagues,
 
The Caribbean Civil Society Working Group on Principle 10 would like to invite you to attend a
briefing meeting on Friday 26 February at 1:00-3:00 pm (UTC -4) for civil society on the
Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (Principle 10). 

 
Principle 10 recognises the three important pillars in environmental decision-making that all individuals should have:

Access to environmental informationThe opportunity to participate in decision-making processes
Effective access to judicial and administrative proceedings

 
At Rio, countries agreed to negotiate a regional instrument to promote Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration.  This process is open to all Caribbean countries to join, and aims to support joint collaboration and
 capacity building among governments for the implementation of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration.  To date, twenty governments of Latin America and the Caribbean have signed the LAC Declaration: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia,
 Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay.  The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean
 (UN ECLAC) is the technical secretariat.  For more information please see

The objectives of the briefing meeting are to:

Increase awareness and understanding among Caribbean civil society organisations about the value of a Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Environmental
 Matters in Latin America and the CaribbeanIncrease awareness and understanding among Caribbean civil society organisations about the current negotiation processStimulate active civil society involvement in the process, including through advocating for their Caribbean governments to be involved

 
The meeting will be hosted by CANARI and will feature a presentation by
Danielle Andrade, Elected Representative of the Public who has been representing civil society in the negotiation process.  This will be followed by open questions and discussion.
