Nkonya, E., Mirzabeaev, A. and vonBraun, J. Eds. 2016. *Economics of Land Degradation and Improvement – A Global Assessment for Sustainable Development*. Springer Intl. Pub. -Open. 695p. ISBN: 978-3-319-19167-6 (Print) 978-3-319-19168-3 (Online) http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-19168-3/page/1 This book covers the economic aspects of land degradation and improvement globally and for a few specific countries – all within 21 chapters. The first 8 chapters are intended to be global in scope while the remaining chapters are focused on countries. Useful frameworks are presented by which to articulate the complexity of land degradation drivers of different scales and origins as well as linear models to calculate various costs of degradation and actions (inactions). Remote sensing appears to be the favourite measurement tool for global assessments (MODIS land cover and NDVI) where land cover changes is interpreted as degradation or improvment. Bhutan was one of the few areas where a biophysical risk model (SWAT) was used with an economic model. The costs of degradation are staggering – eg. annual costs of degradation in India is five times the value of Gross Region Products. This is an Open Access book from Springer (yay!) that can be downloaded either as PDF or ePub. The Fronts Piece, individual chapters or the whole book can be downloaded.
