FAO Work Planning meeting for year 1 of the USAID-funded Emerging Pandemic Threats phase 2 (EPT-2) Programme in Kenya

 

The first national FAO/EPT-2 work planning meeting for Kenya was recently convened in Nairobi on 4 and 5 March. The primary objectives of the FAO component of the EPT-2, a programme funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), are to prevent, detect and respond to infectious diseases that have an adverse impact on health sectors (both human and animal), such as Ebola, avian influenza, and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome caused by Corona virus (MERS-CoV). Pilot Project for Veterinary Laboratory Policy in Kenya - Technical Working Group meeting

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that has long impacted human and animals with increasing incidence for the last ten years in Viet Nam. The Ministry of Health recorded about 400,000 people seek for rabies vaccine due to dog bites per year indicating a significant risk to the country. Not to mention the fact that a significant proportion of people bitten by dogs seek treatment from traditional healers instead of health centres.
