Western farming yields carbon reductions

Wheat Growers and industry colleagues,

I wanted to send you a quick note to let you know the Wheat Growers have an op-ed in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix today titled 'Western farming yields carbon reductions,' which you can read here.

Margaret Hansen, our Saskatchewan VP, and Stephen Vandervalk, our Alberta VP, have written a compelling article on how modern grain farming on the prairies is a good news story on reducing carbon emissions.

With all the discussions on carbon happening globally, in Ottawa, and in our provincial capitals, it's important we tell our story as growers and the ag industry on how we're already achieving great environmental outcomes, and will continue to do so.

That being the case, policy-makers need to take into account the great work growers are doing if they're going to create carbon pricing schemes.

As Margaret and Stephen argue, it would be a perverse policy decision to further tax growers on inputs when farmers are already achieving the desired outcomes of government.

Give it a read here, and we'd really appreciate your feedback--this affects the profitability of grain farming, so this will be a major public policy issue the Wheat Growers will be working on for some time...

Thanks--have a great day!

Cheers,
Robin
