Dear all,

Since the growing concerns in Europe about healthy food, the Europeans are in a stage where people who want to support this should contribute to healthy diets and not just focus on dairy. Schools need better materials and information to bring the message across about healthy food and healthy lifestyles. Health should be the first concern, also for dairy producers and processors. And the next question is: what is the role of dairy products in these healthy diets? It would be great if dairy companies (quite a few are not only involved in dairy but also in other foods!) would contribute to promotion on healthy diets in schools, together with health organisations. This should result in the contribution of dairy to more healthy people!

Onderwerp: School Milk in Europe ... any success stories?

Dairy Outlook is a service of FAO's Trade and Markets Division<http://www.fao.org/economic/est/est-commodities/dairy/en/>

First of all, it is with great pleasure to see some activity on the list. Also for a European it is always interesting to read about how school milk develops in particular Asian countries.

It is my apprehension that the school milk is generally facing difficult conditions in several European countries. In my own country, Denmark, school milk had great success up until 2012/13 with an increasing number of students and schools participating in the school milk scheme. But looking at the past 3-4 years, the development is unfortunately rather negative. Less students wants to participate in the scheme and schools disclaims any liability with regard to getting a school milk scheme to function optimally. From a European perspective, this development may be problematic for the dairy industry. Not because we would lose sales but more the risk of eventually losing the unique communication platform for the industry through school milk.

It would be great if some European colleagues could tell of some functioning schemes with success and increasing interest from students and schools. If there should be others who share my concern feel free to comment.

Dear team Asia,

Please do share the impact assessment if there has been one carried out.
Also, it would be interesting to see how the project has evolved from SMP to it being taken up by national entrepreneurs. How was the transition? What was the added value of the entrepreneurs?

Many thanks,

Souleikha

Dear Team Dairy Asia,
Thanks for sharing this. It would be very interesting to learn more about the impact the school milk programme has had on the children. The Facebook page showed a picture of a child being weighed. Is there an impact or assessment report that can be shared?

Dairy Asia team is pleased to share the facebook page Sustainable Dairy Development in Myanmar (https://www.facebook.com/Sustainable-Dairy-Development-in-Myanmar-464515523752711/?fref=ts). The page also has pictures from the school milk program initiated by FAO as a pilot program and then sustained by national entrepreneurs. FAO support ended in 2015 but the program has sustained and grown.
