Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update.
____________________________________________________________________
Brief commentary of the month:
· The FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 198 points in June 2016, down marginally from May. Weakness dominated the short/medium grain market last month, positioning the Japonica Index 7.7 points (3.3 percent) below May levels. Prices were firmer in the other segments, with higher quality Indica prices holding steady, while lower quality Indica and Aromatic quotations gained ground.
· With the exception of Viet Nam, where harvest progress and subdued demand kept prices under pressure, tight availabilities continued to lend support to quotations across most Asian origins. A stronger Baht contributed to the strength in Thailand, with pressure only reined in by limited buying interest and prospects for improved availabilities from large Government stock auctions. Prices also firmed in India and Pakistan, with a brisker pace of sales rendering gains in the two countries most pronounced in the case of Basmati supplies. Consistent with poor harvest results, the market firmness extended into South America, with quotations in Argentina, Uruguay and, especially, Brazil gaining ground.
· According to the FAO All Rice Price Index, international rice prices in the first half of 2016 were 9.7 percent below year-earlier levels, with the drop chiefly concerning Japonica and Aromatic quotations.
