Dear Members,
Different views and perspectives are being shared on how to
Maximise the impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition;
while some participants argue that the Decade should aim for expanding existing technical solutions that help in the fight against malnutrition, others support a stronger focus on social, economic and political determinants of malnutrition.
We look forward to keep receiving your comments during these last days. In particular, ideas regarding activities that
need to be implemented or accelerated to improve the food security and nutrition of the people in your country, and suggestions on how to promote the quality of commitments from the various actors involved, are welcome.
Your input will be duly considered during the development of the Work Programme for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition.

Claudio reacts to a contribution posted earlier by Erick Boy-Gallego. Claudio argues that an emphasis on biofortification
moves the focus away from the social, economic and political determinants of malnutrition, to which most attention should be paid during the UN Decade.

Melissa San Miguel submits a comment on behalf of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and describes a number
of initiatives that industry has already undertaken, such as providing consumers with a greater variety of products. In order to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, according to GMA, efforts should be strengthened to improve the evidence base regarding effective
interventions and to foster healthy diets, lifestyles and sustainable food systems. Regarding the latter, effective interventions must consider total dietary consumption as well as lifestyle factors, and policies should take into account different consumption
patterns and align with other priorities across the food chain (e.g. food waste).

World Noni Research Foundation, India
|
|
Kuruppacharil elaborates on the various interventions that have already been implemented in India, including the introduction
of the public food distribution system and the midday meal scheme, which has been implemented in primary schools. However, India has still the largest population of women and children that are underweight and suffer from anaemia. In order to improve the situation,
the councillors, operating under the Panchayat system of governance, need to be empowered and made responsible for food and nutrition security.
