Welcome to this November 2016 edition of the FAO Aquaculture e-bulletin covering our most recent news, publications, technical workshops and projects for the period April to November 2016. We hope that this information can be also useful to you in your own aquaculture work.

  • The Aquaculture Branch of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department has published the FAO Aquaculture Newsletter (FAN) 55. FAN is issued two times a year. It presents articles and views from the FAO aquaculture programme and highlights various aspects of aquaculture as seen from the perspective of both headquarters and the regional and subregional offices in the field.

  • Vigo Dialogue 2016: Exploring solutions to promote decent work in fisheries and aquaculture
    On the occasion of the FAO/CONXEMAR annual conference, FAO organized the annual ‘Vigo Dialogue on decent work in Fisheries and Aquaculture’ on October 4 2016. The Dialogue brought together about 75 participants and representatives from governments, the seafood industry, auditing/certification initiatives, international trade unions, NGOs, retailers along with colleagues from the International Labour Organization (ILO) to discuss on progresses made and next actions to strengthen promotion and implementation of decent working conditions and human rights-based due diligence in seafood value chains.   • On November 1st and 2nd, the beneficiaries of the Blue Growth Initiative based in Kibuyuni in Kwale, Kenya and another crop conservation project, accompanied by the FAO Representative, represented FAO at the State House event “The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) mid-term review”. The fisheries beneficiaries show-cased the FAO work and results achieved under the Project, “Support of Food Nutrition Security, Poverty Alleviation and Healthy Oceans” (FMM/GLO/112/MUL Baby 04). Honourable President of Kenya, Mr Kenyatta took time to hear about FAO’s project and the Blue Growth Initiative.

  • TCP/ALG/3501 - Technical support for the implementation of the Algerian marine aquaculture sector within the framework of the National Aquaculture Development Program 2015-2020. The project came to its end and a final workshop is being organized on 14th of November in Alger. FAO has provided technical assistance to the Algerian government particularly, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, during the establishment of new fish farms along the coast for rearing European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) in cages and Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus gallorpovincialis) in longlines.

  • TCP/IRA/3602 - Iran’s Sixth Five Year National Development Plan (FYNDP) calls for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) production to expand. Demand for rainbow trout greatly exceeds national supply. Of the 325 325 tonnes of aquaculture production in 2013, 143 917 tonnes were from rainbow trout. The project, to improve aquaculture production through genetic breeding programs, is consistent with Iran’s Country Programme Framework (CPF 2017-2021)’s strategic priority areas in Sustainable Environment and Agriculture Management; Food Security; Inclusive Development and Resilient Economy; Knowledge Management.
