Your FSN Forum team CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED [icon]Marielle Dubbeling, RUAF Foundation, Netherlands Marielle shares a publication featuring thirteen case studies from city regions around the world which are developing City Region Food Systems projects, programmes and policies linking rural and urban areas. The cases offer strategies and tools that can be applied by city regions around the world, including the promotion of (peri)urban agriculture, support for short supply chains, and the promotion of food waste prevention, reduction and management, as well as the recovery and redistribution of safe and nutritious food for human consumption. However, these settlements are becoming a way station for people of working age to pursue labour migration. In particular the elderly of Bishkek’s informal settlements are left behind while often lacking access to food. The project brings together youth and elders to engage in community gardening through peri-urban agriculture and animal husbandry. Hence, it links disparate generations through labour, provides a source of readily available and locally produced food and promotes knowledge sharing between rural elders and urban youth. In order to address this, the government has introduced payment for ecosystem services and encouraged the sustainable use of agro-biodiversity. A concrete example constitutes promoting eco-branding of products and services from the Reserve. This would contribute significantly to food security and income generation and be crucial for building a strong urban and rural cooperation system that secures sustainable supply chains.
