Dear Friends (apologies for cross-postings)
McGill University recently issued this press release on our latest open-access publication. This ebook contains the information of about 3 volumes- each about 500-600 pages- about the traditional animal foods of Indigenous Peoples in northern North America. We are so glad this is finally completed and "out there" in cyberspace. We have developed a connection to the North American network of librarians to help with information sharing, but please share within your contacts.
All best wishes for spring!
Harriet
After more than 10 years in the making:
A new open-access encyclopedia of more than 500 animal species that are part of traditional food systems of Indigenous Peoples in northern North America has just been launched - a tool for teachers and researchers of all kinds
It's based, in part, on close to 500 ethnographic sources - some going back about a century- and peer-reviewed literature sources of information on species biology and habitat, and nutrient data.
It provides a picture of traditional foods in the past and present that can be searched by region, by culture, or by animal.

Quotes from Bill Erasmus and Norma Kassi:
"This web book is an important step for Indigenous Peoples in North America and around the world to protect our traditional food and ecosystems. The research contributes to understanding the importance of local food and its benefits to our cultures, food security and health."
Bill Erasmus, Dene National Chief and Regional Chief, Assembly of First Nations, Yellowknife.
"In light of the food insecurity crisis we are facing in the Arctic regions, this research on our traditional foods by renowned scientists of CINE will become very useful in processes of education within our communities. Traditional food systems are critical to the culture and health of Indigenous Peoples and this website includes a lot of useful information about traditional animal foods and their nutritional value."
Norma Kassi, Director of Indigenous Collaboration, Arctic Institute of Community-Based Research, Whitehorse
