Terms of Reference for a Consultant in the Area of Animal Feed and Feeding at FAO Head Quarter
Duration: Six months, starting between 20 May and 15 June 2017

Organizational Setting
The Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) promotes and facilitates the sustainable development of the livestock sector, integrating scientific, technical expertise and
policy advice. It manages technical programmes and hosts technical networks in areas of animal genetics, animal feeding and pastoralism, among others. It provides analysis and technical assistance, and facilitates policy dialogue (including intergovernmental
bodies).
The post is located in the Animal Production and Genetic Resources Unit (AGAG/AGAS). The Unit generates information and manages knowledge, facilitates the development and implementation
of innovative solutions and provides technical expertise to improve productivity, efficiency and resilience of livestock production systems. The activities of the Unit cover all production systems, from pastoralism to intensive systems, including crop-livestock
integrated systems; and aim to enhance their sustainability.
Under the overall supervision of the Director AGA, the day-to-day supervision of the Head AGAG/ AGAS, and in close collaboration with colleagues from AGA, Strategic Objective
5 Core Team and Decentralized Offices, the incumbent will contribute to FAO Strategic Framework, SP2, SP3 and SP4.
Reporting Lines
The incumbent will report to Senior Animal production Officer and Head, Animal Production and Genetic Resource Branch of the Animal Production and Health Division, FAO, Rome
Technical Focus
Enhance sustainability of livestock production systems through development and application of animal feeding strategies.
Key Results
Comprehensive technical and policy expertise to support the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of FAO programmes and projects related to animal feed and feeding;
and preparation of products such as publications, manuals and guidelines.
Minimum Requirements
·
Advanced university degree in Animal Nutrition. Preference will be given to a person with a PhD degree.
·
Seven years of proven experience in managing animal feed and feeding in developing countries, with a focus on extending feed resource base, using efficiently
available feed resources and generating feed-related quality data;
·
Sound knowledge of animal nutrition concepts and their applications in livestock production systems in developing countries;
·
Demonstrated capability to integrate animal nutrition into a broader context of mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change; bioenergy; biotechnology; emergency preparedness and response; and food and nutrition
security;
·
Sound laboratory knowledge including methodologies for determination of chemical composition and nutritional quality, quality control systems, and proficiency tests;
·
Experience of organizing trainings, and managing extension, research and human resource development programmes related to animal feed and feeding and sustainable development of livestock sector; and
·
Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Russian

The person may be asked to perform other duties as required. At the end of the assignment, the incumbent will prepare a report describing in detail, for each point listed in the Terms of Reference the activities undertaken, major results
obtained, problems encountered. A section on recommendations and lessons learned, presenting guiding principles for future interventions, will be included.
