Welcome to this May 2017 edition of the FAO Aquaculture e-bulletin covering our most recent news, publications, technical workshops and projects for the period November 2016 to end of April 2017. We hope that this information can be also useful to you in your own aquaculture work.

  • The Aquaculture Branch of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department has published the FAO Aquaculture Newsletter (FAN) 56. FAN is issued two times a year. It presents articles and views from the FAO aquaculture programme and highlights various aspects of aquaculture as seen from the perspective of both headquarters and the regional and subregional offices in the field.

  • The Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of FAO is pleased to announce the publication of new technical documents on aquaculture, which are of global relevance, namely:
    Six Regional Reviews of Aquaculture Development, Status and Trends.

    In continuing the global efforts to achieve aquaculture sustainability through dissemination of up-to-date information on the status and trends of the sector, FAO has published six Aquaculture Regional Reviews. These reviews can be of interest and pertinent use to national governments, regional organizations, policy-makers, farmers, investors, civil society organizations, research and training institutions and the general public.

  • The inception meetings for the project titled: “Use of non-conventional water in agriculture in support to sustainable agri-aquaculture development in desert and arid lands in the Near East and North Africa region, the cases of Algeria, Egypt and Oman” within the framework of FAO Water Scarcity Initiative, were held in Muscat, Oman the 6-7 March 2017, in Alger, Algeria the 22-23 March 2017, and in Cairo, Egypt the 29 March 2017. The three selected countries will carry out a national assessment of the use of non-conventional water for agri-aquaculture production systems in arid lands that will be presented and discussed during a regional workshop to be held by the end of 2017.

  • The inception workshop for the project titled “Appréciation de l’action globale et des realisations sectorielles de l’Agence Nationale pour le développement de l’Aquaculture (ANDA) et appui ŕ l’élaboration d’une stratégie pour le développement de l’aquaculture au Maroc” was held in Rabat, Morocco the 29 March 2017. The project will support the National Agency in charge of Aquaculture development in assessing its achievements during its first five years of operation and to establish a road map for implementing a new strategy for aquaculture development.

  • The Stakeholder’s Inception Workshop on Fish Loss and Waste in Egypt, was held in Alexandria, Egypt the 11-12 April 2017. A clear action plan and priority areas were developed on consultation with all the actors. Field studies in the selected areas will be carried-on, a draft National Strategy will be developed, and both will be presented and finalized during the final workshop at the end of 2017.
