v Linking the GBEP indicators to the Sustainable Development Goals: workshop in Bonn, 3-4 July 2017
GBEP is working on a paper to identify the linkages existing between the Sustainable Development Goals and the GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy (GSIs), and organized an international workshop in Bonn on 3-4 July 2017, to discuss the topic.
The Fifth GBEP Bioenergy Week was successfully held in Ghana from 22 to 24 June 2017. Hosted by ECREEE, in cooperation with GBEP, and supported by FAO, UNDP, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Forestry, Water and the Environment, the Austrian and Spanish Cooperation; it gathered 90 participants including representatives from most ECOWAS countries, but also from private sector and civil society organisations.
After testing the GBEP indicators in Colombia and Indonesia from 2011 to 2014, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) started a new project in 2016 to enhance the bioenergy sustainability in two new countries – Paraguay and Viet Nam - through the use of the GBEP indicators. Updates on 2017 project's meetings.
v Global Bioenergy Perspectives: the REN21 Renewables 2017 Global Status Report
Newly installed renewable power capacity set new records in 2016, with 161 gigawatts (GW) added, increasing the global total by almost 9 percent relative to 2015, says the REN21 Renewables 2017 Global Status Report. The UNEP-hosted multi-stakeholder network reported that for the fifth consecutive year, investment in new renewables (including all hydropower) was roughly double the investment in fossil fuel generating capacity, reaching about USD 250 billion.
