Thank you Anders for sharing the official link where information on the EFSA FoodEx2 classification system is provided.

Dear all,

As highlighted previously by Ruth, EFSA is indeed in close collaboration with FAO to make FoodEx2 easy to use globally.
Please, also be informed that EFSA aims at updating both the FoodEx2 catalogue and the FoodEx2 browsing tool by mid-September.
The new browsing tool will be able also to use other than the FoodEx2 catalogue.
As soon as the new versions are available we will inform you through this mailing list.

Kind regards,

Sofia

Dear Stacia,

The FoodEx2 is developed by the European Food Safety Authority for use in data interchange between the European Member states.
It is a comprehensive food classification system with an underlying description system.
The official link is

https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/data/data-standardisation

FAO has been working with FoodEx2, see earlier e-mails from Ruth concerning this.

All the best,
Anders

Can we have a link for FoodEx2 and any information about any other nations using it?

Malawi is slowly but steadily working on its food composition and started a a food consumption system that is having hiccups.

Dear all,
I would really like to consider to use FoodEx2. It would be great we in the future food composition and consumption data would be coded using the same food description and classification system. Food matching and data linkage would be greatly enhanced. FoodEx2 is flexible with different hierarchies for different purposes. FAO is working with EFSA to include more species and facets to make it even more globally useful.

We started coding all our new databases using FoodEx2. It works.

Best wishes
Ruth

Dear David,

I know that you already know and/or has been using the LanguaL food description system and the FoodEx2 food classification, so I will not mention them here ☺

However,, I would like to make you aware of the very interesting food ontology initiative, FoodOn - a farm to fork ontology (http://foodontology.github.io/foodon/).
For more information about FoodOn, please see their web site.

As it is not good e-mail practice to send to everybody other persons’ e-mail addresses without their consent, I will inform Damion Dooley (University of British Columbia), one of the leading forces in FoodOn, about your potential interest.

All the best,
Anders

Subject: Ontology of Foods

Hello:
USDA is in the process of developing a new databases system for managing food composition data and desires to make ontology part of this system. Is anyone aware of any computer programs for managing ontologies for foods integrating information from agriculture, food technology, and human nutrition? Also, has anyone worked on ontologies in this area or developed models and has any information they can shere?

Thank you,

David
