Dear Carib-Agri-list,

FAO and its WECAFC Secretariat are pleased to announce the publication of a brochure on the Marking and Identification of Fishing Vessels, which is now available online at: http://www.fao.org/3/a-i7783e.pdf

This brochure has been used in recent days by the Regional Working Group on IUU Fishing (RWG-IUU), which organized its 2nd meeting in Barbados on 19-21 September 2017. The RWG-IUU is a joint advisory body for CRFM, OSPESCA and WECAFC. The RWG-IUU developed a regional recommendation for the marking and identification of fishing vessels, which will likely come into effect at the end of 2018 or early 2019 for the whole Caribbean region.

This brochure provides information on why vessels should be properly marked and how to do so in practice. Moreover it gives clear information on how to identify fishing vessels. Best practices are shown through various cases. The brochure is made for fisheries officers, inspectors and Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS officers), fisherfolk as well as coast guards, navy and port officials in the Caribbean region.

Please share this with any colleagues who may be interested.

For more information on this brochure, which was made in collaboration with TM Tracking, Stop Illegal Fishing, the EU DG Mare and the World Bank, please contact the WECAFC secretariat at [log in to unmask]

More information on the 2nd meeting of the RWG-IUU is available at: http://www.fao.org/americas/noticias/ver/en/c/1039097/

With warm regards

Raymon van Anrooy

WECAFC Secretary
