KEY MESSAGES

 

§  Severe floods in 2017 have affected some 7 million people, causing deaths and injuries, loss of livestock and food supplies, and damage to housing and infrastructure

§  The floods caused severe damage to the agriculture sector, including losses of the main food staple rice crops, with most of the damage concentrated in northern districts

§  Prices of rice, country’s main staple, reached record levels in September, with seasonal tightness exacerbated by flood-induced crop losses in 2017. Overall, rice prices remained 30 percent higher on an annual basis.

§  The impact of the floods and elevated rice prices have severely compromised the livelihoods of the affected households
