The award, the FAO Margarita Lizárraga Medal Award<http://www.fao.org/fao-awards/conference-awards/margarita-lizarraga/en/>, pays tribute to a former FAO colleague who was renowned for her nearly 40 years of work and unending dedication in fisheries and to FAO. She was strongly committed to fostering supporting the fisheries sector, especially in developing countries, and had a decisive role in promoting the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The FAO Margarita Lizárraga Medal Award is awarded each biennium, and nominations are now open for the 2018-19 period. The award is presented to any person or organization that has served with distinction in the application of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. A Selection Committee from the Committee on Fisheries will judge the applications for the award based on specific criteria<http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/fao-awards/Margarita_Liz%C3%A1rraga_Medal_Award_EN.pdf>. The selection criteria include the practical, hands-on contribution to the application of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, tangible results, sustainability of the initiative and the potential for a snowball or catalytic effect from the initiative.
