AFEX: An Ammoniation Technology to Upgrade Crop Residues into Nutritious Ruminant Feed Ingredients. AFEX
(Ammonia Fiber Expansion) is an ammoniation technology that increases the digestibility of agricultural crop residues such as rice and wheat straw, corn stover, and sugarcane bagasse – by increasing the accessibility of hemicellulosic and cellulosic sugars
to hydrolytic enzymes. An international team headed by Michigan State University (MSU) and its technology development affiliate, Michigan Biotechnology Institute (MBI) is working actively with partners to evaluate, optimize and scale up AFEX technology, with
a current focus on low and medium income countries.
