FAO Media Briefing on The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture Report

Friday, 15 February 2019, 11 am – 12 pm (Rome time), FAO Rome

FAO will hold a media briefing to present the findings of the upcoming The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture report – to be launched on 22 February.

About the Report:

The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture is the first-ever report to analyze the state of plants, animals and micro-organisms that support food and agricultural production – at genetic, species and ecosystem level.

Biodiversity for food and agriculture encompasses both wild and domesticated plants and animals that provide food, feed, fuel and fibre; and “associated biodiversity” - the myriad of organisms that support food production (including bees and other pollinators; plants, animals and micro-organisms that help purify water and air, combat crop and livestock diseases, and keep soils fertile). The report looks at all these elements.

Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the foundation of our food systems; makes production systems and livelihoods more resilient to shocks and stresses, including to the effects of climate change; and is key for increasing food production in the face of growing needs, while limiting negative impacts on the environment.

The report was prepared by FAO under the guidance of its Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - the only permanent intergovernmental body that specifically addresses biological diversity for food and agriculture – and is based on the analysis of global data, including data provided specifically for this report by 91 countries.

About the Media Briefing:

The report’s coordinator, the Secretary of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture as well as FAO forestry and fishery specialists will present and answer questions on the findings of the report.

Journalists can also call in during the briefing if unable to attend in person. To call in, dial: (+39) 06 570 59103.
