Launch of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming and Global Action Plan

29 May 2019, 10 am, Red Room, FAO Rome. The launch is open to media.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will launch the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (2019-2028), and the Global Action Plan to boost support for family farmers.

The two UN agencies lead activities for the implementation of the Decade of Family Farming, declared by the United Nations at the end of 2017.

The Decade of Family Farming aims to create a conducive environment that strengthens the position of family farming, and maximizes family farmers’ contributions to global food security and nutrition.

Family farmers produce 80 percent of the world’s food, and are important drivers of sustainable development.

The Global Action Plan will provide detailed guidance for the international community on collective and coherent actions that can be taken during 2019-2028. It highlights the need to increase, among other things, family farmers’ access to natural resources, markets, training and income-generating opportunities.

The Decade and the Action Plan will be launched by:

·         José Graziano da Silva, FAO Director-General; and

·         Gilbert F. Houngbo, IFAD President

The following partners of the Decade initiative will also speak at the opening session:

·         David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP)

·         Theo De Jager, President, World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO)

·         Elizabeth Mpofu, General Coordinator, La via Campesina (LVC)

·         Martín Uriarte, President, World Rural Forum (WRF)

María Fernanda Espinosa, President of the UN General Assembly will also deliver a video message.

Agriculture ministers and vice-ministers from a range of countries will also speak on the day of the launch.

Other events on family farming (27-28 May)

On 27-28 May, prior to the launch of the decade, there will be a series of sessions – open to media - focused on aspects of family farming across different regions, as well as on challenges and opportunities for family farming. The sessions will bring together representatives from a range of countries and sectors.
